How It Works

Three steps, about a minute

1. Type or paste your players

One name per line, or paste a column straight out of a spreadsheet. Switch to a blank sheet if you would rather write them in by hand.

2. Check the draw

Choose whether round one follows your list, a random shuffle, or standard seeding that keeps the strongest apart. Byes are worked out for you.

3. Print it

The sheet is fitted to one A4 page exactly, so it never spills onto a second one. Your print dialog will save it as a PDF if you prefer.

The Format

How double elimination works

Everyone starts in the main draw. Lose once and you drop into the losers bracket; lose there and you are out.

  • Roughly twice the matchesAbout 2N minus 2 for N players: 16 players is around 30 matches instead of 15. Budget the day accordingly.
  • Two brackets, two sheetsThe main draw and the losers draw are separate pictures. This tool prints them as two pages so both stay readable.
  • The losers bracket is always blankIt cannot be seeded, because who drops into it depends on results that have not happened yet. You fill it in as you go.
  • The final is asymmetricWhoever comes through the losers bracket arrives with one loss already. Decide in advance whether they must beat the main-draw winner once or twice.

The two decisions to make before anyone plays

Does the final reset?

The main-draw winner is unbeaten; the losers-bracket winner has one defeat. Many tournaments make the challenger win twice, which is called a bracket reset. Others play one match and call it done. Both are common. Write your choice at the top of the sheet.

How many courts?

Double elimination roughly doubles the fixtures, and the two brackets run in parallel rather than one after the other. Two courts is close to a minimum at sixteen players.

The reward for all this is a much better ranking. A single elimination draw tells you who won and almost nothing else. Double elimination genuinely separates the top few, because getting to the final through the losers bracket takes a real run of form.
