Three steps, about a minute
1. Type or paste your players
One name per line, or paste a column straight out of a spreadsheet. Switch to a blank sheet if you would rather write them in by hand.
2. Check the draw
Choose whether round one follows your list, a random shuffle, or standard seeding that keeps the strongest apart. Byes are worked out for you.
3. Print it
The sheet is fitted to one A4 page exactly, so it never spills onto a second one. Your print dialog will save it as a PDF if you prefer.
The Format
Three losses, and a warning about time
Triple elimination is uncommon for a good reason, and it is worth being honest about that before you print one.
- About 3N matchesRoughly three times a knockout draw of the same size. Sixteen players is in the region of forty-five matches.
- Three draws to trackThe main draw, a second chance and a third chance. This is the practical limit of what one person can run on paper.
- No single standardUnlike single and double elimination, there is no universally agreed structure. Agree how re-entries work before you start, and write it on the sheet.
- Very hard to scheduleThe later draws depend on results from the earlier ones, so you cannot publish times in advance.
When It Makes Sense
Who actually runs triple elimination
Good fit
Small fields, a full weekend, a league where the standings matter, and an organiser who has run one before.
Bad fit
One afternoon, one table, casual entrants, or anybody who needs to know their start time in advance.
It turns up mainly in pool and cornhole leagues, and in small circuits where the same people compete all season. The common thread is that entrants have travelled and paid, the field is small enough to absorb the extra matches, and the result carries ranking points that people care about.
If you are thinking about it for a social tournament, consider double elimination instead. It gives most of the fairness for two-thirds of the matches, and it is a format your players will already understand without a briefing.
